The documents you actually need — and when

Enrolment needs almost nothing. Placement needs more. Here is the real order, so you are not scrambling for a passport the week before an interview.

A lot of students hold off enquiring because they think they need a passport, medical certificate and full paperwork ready first. You don’t. Here’s the real order documents come into play, from day one of enquiry to placement.

What you need to enrol

01
Qualification proof

Your 10th (SSC) marks memo, or higher qualification certificates if you have them.

02
ID proof

Any government photo ID: Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID.

That’s genuinely it for enrolment. No passport, no medical report, no visa paperwork needed at this stage.

What comes into play during training

Nothing formal is required from you here beyond attendance and effort. But this is the right window to start two things alongside your course, so you’re not scrambling for them later:

  • Apply for a passport if you don’t have one. No reason to wait until training ends. The sooner you start, the more relaxed the timeline later.
  • Be honest about any medical condition during your in-house screening, instead of waiting for the cruise line’s own medical check to surface it. It’s much easier to plan around something known early.

What matters before placement

Closer to interview and sign-on stage, documentation gets real: a valid passport, and clearing the medical fitness checks that cruise lines themselves set and conduct. Visa and travel documentation, where applicable, get handled as part of the process once an offer is in place. Ask any institute, including us, exactly what documentation support is included, and make sure it is clearly explained before you enrol.

Passport basics, honestly

An Indian passport is applied for through the official Passport Seva portal, either as a normal application or, for a higher fee, a faster Tatkal one. Processing time depends on police verification and your specific application, so treat any number of days you hear as a general guide, not a guarantee. One thing worth remembering: you don’t need a job offer to start this. Applying early, alongside your training, is the easiest way to avoid a late scramble.

The passport process, step by step

Most students have never actually done this before, so here is the process itself, not just the advice to start it early:

01
Register and fill the application online

Create an account on the Passport Seva portal and fill in the application form for a fresh passport.

02
Pay the fee and book an appointment

Pay online and book a slot at the Passport Seva Kendra nearest to you — Visakhapatnam has its own centre, so this does not usually mean travelling far.

03
Visit with original documents

Carry your originals for verification: proof of address, proof of date of birth, and the ID documents the portal lists for your application type.

04
Police verification

Most first-time applicants go through this after the application, not before. It is the step that most affects your overall timeline.

05
Passport dispatched

Once verification clears, the passport is printed and sent to your registered address.

None of this requires a job offer, a training certificate, or anything from us. You can start this the same week you enquire, if you want to.

The students who move fastest at the placement stage are almost always the ones who applied for a passport in month one of training, not month eleven. Start it early. It costs you nothing to have it ready sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Document questions people ask

Do I need a passport before I enrol in a cruise hospitality course?

No. A passport is not required to enrol in training. Knowing whether you already have one, or how far along you are in applying, helps plan the documentation stage closer to placement.

What ID proof is needed to enrol?

Any government photo ID — Aadhaar, PAN or voter ID are all accepted.

Do I need a medical certificate to join a course?

Not to enrol. Cruise lines set and conduct their own medical fitness checks later, closer to sign-on. Be upfront about any existing medical condition during screening rather than at the last stage.

How long does an Indian passport actually take?

A normal application typically takes a few weeks after police verification, and Tatkal (urgent) applications are faster at a higher fee, through the official Passport Seva portal. Exact timelines vary by application and location, so treat this as a general guide, not a guarantee.

Does the institute arrange my passport and visa for me?

Ask any institute exactly what documentation support is included, and get it in writing. What matters is that you know, before enrolling, whether documentation guidance is part of your placement support or something you need to arrange separately.
